It’s that time of year again: from November 15th until April 15th, it is mandatory to travel with winter tires or snow chains on many Italian roads.

This is a provision outlined in Article 6 of the Highway Code, mainly concerning extra-urban roads and subject to specific ordinances by the road manager. Last year, these roads accounted for about 30% of the total. The changes introduced by the New Highway Code establish a ban on importing, producing, selling, and mounting non-approved components, under the threat of significant fines and seizure of materials. Those driving with non-approved tires may face penalties, including the withdrawal of the vehicle’s registration document, rendering it unable to circulate. In the event of an accident, insurance may contest the settlement of the claim.
